Floods in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, in 2024 and their effects on the epidemiology of leptospirosis

🌧️ A study published in CSP analyzed the impact of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul on the incidence of leptospirosis in the state and identified a significant increase in the disease between April and July 2024.

A total of 1,007 confirmed cases were recorded, representing a 7.6-fold increase compared to the same period in 2023. Hospitalizations also rose, and deaths increased from 7 to 35.

Cases spread across more than 200 municipalities, with a high concentration in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Area. Although the floods increased exposure to risk, the results show that leptospirosis is deeply linked to social inequalities, sanitation deficits, and urban vulnerabilities.
