Sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and young people: identification of demands and experiences based on a qualitative study in communities in five Brazilian cities

Vulnerability in Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health for Young People

A qualitative study with 139 young people from low-income communities in Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Manaus, and Salvador identified vulnerabilities in three areas: individual, programmatic, and social.

Lack of information, stigma, fear of HIV diagnosis, and precarious health services hinder access to care. Furthermore, the unpreparedness of professionals and the mismatch between the needs of young people and the functioning of health units exacerbate this scenario.

The authors reveal the need for investments in spaces for dialogue, prevention, and professional training to guarantee the right to health for this population.
