Monitoring and evaluation indicators of Freestanding Birth Centers: results of the study Births in Brazilian Birthing Centers

A study analyzing indicators from Peri-hospital Normal Birth Centers (CPNp) in Brazil shows that, despite being underutilized, these services offer safe, respectful, and evidence-based care to women and babies at habitual risk.

Among the 3,097 births analyzed, 96.9% were conducted by nurses/midwives, and almost 99% had a companion chosen by the woman. Interventions were minimal: amniotomy in 15.7%, oxytocin in 7%, and episiotomy in only 0.4% of cases.

The study reinforces the importance of expanding and improving the use of CPNp, aligned with the guidelines of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the recommendations of the WHO.
