Brief counseling in routine consultations: a population-based strategy to reduce the disease and the economic burdens of smoking in Brazil

Brief Counseling for Smoking Cessation in Routine Appointments

A new Brief Communication from CSP estimates the population impact of this strategy in Brazil, using data from the National Health Survey (PNS). “If all smokers had received brief counseling in 2019, we would have had half a million more ex-smokers,” emphasizes the author.

The main reductions would occur among men with heart disease and women with stroke. The results reinforce the potential of public health policies based on simple and cost-effective actions, such as brief counseling, to combat smoking and reduce the burden of chronic diseases in the country.
