A study published in Cadernos de Saúde Pública analyzed the exposure of artisanal fishermen and fisherwomen in Pernambuco to oil during the 2019 environmental disaster on the northeastern coast.
The study, released by our partner Agência Bori, identified three levels of exposure: low, medium, and high, both during fishing activities and while cleaning beaches, reefs, and mangroves.
The results reveal serious cases of direct contact with oil, strong odors, and skin irritations, with higher concentrations and greater exposure on the northern coast of Pernambuco, especially among women.
