Hesitation and vaccination: reflections and theoretical-practical challenges for COVID-19 vaccination coverage in primary care

💉 Vaccine hesitancy took on new forms during the pandemic, affecting vaccination coverage and highlighting tensions between science, misinformation, and public health practices.

Drawing on experiences in Primary Health Care in Rio de Janeiro, this essay analyzes how fears of adverse events, the circulation of fake news on social media, and failures in health communication influence vaccination adherence, particularly regarding booster doses.

Although initial refusal is a minority stance, low adherence to the full vaccination schedule reveals residual hesitancy that undermines collective care agreements. The study argues that the right to health communication, combined with public education, critical dialogue, and active listening in local communities, is essential for strengthening trust in vaccines and the SUS.
