Indigenous Peoples’ Day

On this April 19, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we reaffirm the importance of recognizing the diversity, resilience, and rights of Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous peoples continue to face profound social, health, and territorial inequalities, which manifest as historical challenges in accessing healthcare, food security, and the guarantee of fundamental rights. At the same time, their histories reveal resilience, knowledge, and unique ways of caring for life—all of which are essential for designing fairer and more effective public policies.

The reflections published in Cadernos de Saúde Pública highlight that promoting indigenous health requires recognition of sociocultural specificities, protection of territories, and a commitment to redressing historically produced inequalities.

On this day, we emphasize the urgency of strengthening public policies that ensure dignity, respect, and social justice for indigenous peoples.
