Physical disability due to leprosy in the state of Bahia, Brazil (2001-2023): occurrence, change from diagnosis to discharge, and associated factors

A population-based study analyzes more than 58,000 new cases of leprosy in Bahia between 2001 and 2023 to understand the incidence, progression, and factors associated with physical disability at the time of diagnosis and upon completion of multidrug therapy.

📊 Despite some improvement over the course of follow-up, leprosy continues to result in a high burden of physical disability, especially among men, people with low levels of education, multibacillary cases, and those with leprosy reactions.

The historical data series also highlights the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on timely diagnosis and case monitoring, underscoring persistent challenges in surveillance and continuity of care.
