Sexual abuse and substance use before or during sex among transgender women in Brazil

⚠️ More than half of the transgender women and transvestites participating in a national study reported having suffered sexual abuse or attempted abuse throughout their lives.

A new article published in CSP analyzed data from the TransOdara study, conducted between 2019 and 2021 in five Brazilian capitals, with more than a thousand transgender women and transvestites.

The results show that 36.7% reported using substances such as marijuana, cocaine, or crack before or during sex, and that a history of sexual abuse increases the likelihood of this practice by 17%.

The study also identified that a history of sex work is associated with a higher prevalence of substance use in these contexts, while higher education appears as a protective factor. For the authors, these findings reveal how different forms of violence and social vulnerability permeate the trajectories of this population.
