The hearing impaired communicate through sign language: the complexity of gaining access to healthcare services

A new article in CSP investigates the access of deaf people who use Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) to healthcare in Campinas (SP), comparing services in the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System) and the private network.

The study shows that communication with healthcare professionals is considered poor in both the SUS (64.3%) and the private network (67.6%), highlighting linguistic and communicational barriers.

Despite the difficulties, users exclusively of the SUS were 22% more likely to positively evaluate communication compared to those who use only private services.

The article reinforces the urgency of investments in accessibility, Libras training for healthcare professionals, and expansion of specialized services.
