The interaction between children and the environment: an agenda for health

🌱 Children and the Environment

In the latest issue of CSP Perspectives, the authors reflect on how the destructive way in which capital reorganizes our relationship with nature directly impacts children and adolescents, especially those in more vulnerable contexts. According to a UNICEF report (2022), 40 million girls and boys in Brazil are exposed to more than one climate or environmental risk.

Disasters, forced displacement, and environmental crimes sever family, community, and socio-environmental ties, affecting health, education, protection, and the very right to childhood. For many children, nature ceases to be a space for discovery and comes to be seen as a threat: fear of rain, floods, and landslides.

This article proposes shifting the debate: to consider the relationship between children and nature less in terms of therapeutic utility and more in terms of reciprocity and care. It serves as an invitation to align science, public policy, and professional practices with discussions on the social determinants of health.
