Regional variance in compliance with guidelines of the Brazilian National School Feeding Program: a comparative analysis between the Northeast and South regions of Brazil with machine learning

🌱 The National School Feeding Program (PNAE) requires that at least 30% of federal funds be allocated to the purchase of food from family farms. In practice, however, results vary widely from one region to another: while 77% of municipalities in the South meet this target, in the Northeast that figure drops to just 38% 📊

New research published in CSP uses machine learning to understand what lies behind these differences.

🍽️ In the South, the profile of local production, population density, and access to technical assistance are the most significant factors. In the Northeast, municipalities’ financial constraints and the lower level of formalization of agricultural operations emerge as the main obstacles

One of the main conclusions points out that technical assistance is decisive: the more support family farmers have, the greater the chances that the municipality will comply with the law.
