Between the unknown and the emerging: mapping the Oropouche and Mayaro viruses in Brazil

🦟 A study analyzed the geospatial distribution of 16,571 cases of Oropouche fever and 379 cases of Mayaro fever between 2015 and January 2025. The results show that these diseases remain neglected and underreported, and are often confused with other arboviral diseases.

Cases are concentrated mainly in the North Region, with clusters of high Oropouche incidence in Amazonas, Acre, and Rondônia, as well as in Espírito Santo. Mayaro, on the other hand, showed clusters in Pará, Amazonas, and Roraima, in addition to isolated cases in the Midwest. Young adults were the most affected, with an average age of 37–38 years.

🌳 Spatial analysis also points to a link between areas of higher incidence and heavily deforested regions of the Amazon. Agricultural expansion, environmental degradation, and urban growth may facilitate the spread of these viruses and increase the risk of new epidemics.
