Food and Water Insecurity and Monitoring the SDGs
In Brazil, approximately 8.6 million people still face severe food insecurity, and climate change is exacerbating this scenario, affecting access to water and food production.
This Perspectives article discusses the experience of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA) as a valid and reliable way to assess water insecurity in the country in light of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Water insecurity directly affects hunger and health in Brazil, seriously compromising the achievement of SDG 2. Researchers warn that extreme weather events worsen inequalities in access to water and compromise food production, primarily impacting vulnerable populations.
The authors highlight that the validation of an EBIA can help to better understand this relationship and strengthen public policies, being essential to improve public policies and mitigate the effects of climate change.
